The Phenomenon of British Girls in Pink Tutus
I am no singer, but I was proud to say I can rap the entire song “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj. Word. For. Word. Until I came across a video on Twitter of a couple young girls singing the song on YouTube. Dressed in matching pink outfits complete with tutus and tiaras, these girls really got into it. I was impressed.
Watch them sing here:
Not long after I saw the video, Ellen brought up the young YouTube duo, Sophia Grace and Rosie, and invited them to her show to sing and meet the one and only Nicki Minaj. Since then, they’ve become regulars on The Ellen Show. They’ve corresponded awards shows such as the Grammys and the AMAs. Sung not only Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Adele’s tunes, but their own. And have started their own show within The Ellen Show: Tea Time with Sophia Grace and Rosie, on which they’ve hosted interviews with Hugh Grant and Taylor Swift. Ellen has even surprised these girls with cotton candy machines, shopping sprees to Toys “R” Us, and a trip to Disneyland.
Sophia Grace and Rosie have accomplished a lot at such young ages. Which begs the question, what do you think of the ever expanding phenomenon of Sophia Grace and Rosie? Are they being spoiled for their mediocre talents, bright personalities, and cute British accents? In a world where kids get ribbons and awards even if they come in dead last in a soccer tournament, are Sophia Grace and Rosie just learning that being cute and funny gets them a prize and an applause? Kids are not experiencing the feeling of failure anymore. It takes hard work to win big. Or is it just overkill? The girls had their fifteen minutes of fame, let’s move on with our lives and forget about all the excessively frilly and pink tutus.
Personally, I’ve been a fan of Ellen’s for a long time and I enjoy watching her and these quirky girls to laugh and relax. Does Sophia Grace have talent, I think so, but only time will tell how her singing voice matures. Maybe Ellen will sign Sophia Grace to her record label one day. Who knows.
For now, you can join in on the laughs and watch all of Sophia Grace and Rosie’s videos on Ellen’s site here.
